BOTOX Boston

BOTOX® Cosmetic injections are a very common procedure in Boston. BOTOX® Cosmetic itself is probably the best-known treatment in the world of facial plastics. It has certainly earned its reputation by being reliable, inexpensive, effective, and safe. If you are interested in starting an anti-aging regimen, it is a great place to start.

BOTOX® Cosmetic works by freezing targeted muscles in the face to help prevent the further creation of fine lines and wrinkles. It also helps reduce the wrinkles that are already present by relaxing the skin around the muscles and letting them smooth out over time. It is a quick procedure that can be performed right in our office at 91 Newbury Street in Boston.

What's the timeline for BOTOX®?

You will start seeing the changes from BOTOX® Cosmetic in the first few days after treatment, but the full effects take up to a couple of weeks. BOTOX® Cosmetic, as with a lot of anti-aging procedures, can have a fantastic cumulative effect - so, while the first treatment can be very satisfying, the advantages build over time if you continue to get regular treatments. I usually recommend BOTOX® Cosmetic every 3 to 4 months.

A "Boston Approach" To BOTOX®?

I’m often asked, especially here in Boston, if there is a way to take a more conservative approach to BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments. Sometimes patients would like to start more slowly until they can see how the treatments will affect them personally. Others would like to avoid a ‘waxy’ expressionless face that reminds them of certain celebrities. The answer to whether we can start conservatively is this: Absolutely.  In fact, I often recommend a lower amount of BOTOX® Cosmetic with the first treatment, and a follow up to assess the effectiveness. I think this type of big picture thinking is an excellent way to approach any anti-aging regimen.  I think conservative and thoughtful is always a good long-term strategy.

BOTOX® Basics

BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments, while not considered painful, are injections.  I most commonly liken them to tweezing a hair that has never been plucked before.  Sometimes the areas of the face around the injection points can bruise a bit, but this can generally be covered up with make-up.  I recommend that patients don’t fly or exercise vigorously for about 24 hours after treatment. The reason for this is that BOTOX® Cosmetic is injected just under the skin, so any of these types of activities could cause the placement of the BOTOX® Cosmetic to shift slightly, which isn’t ideal for the effectiveness of the treatment. So, I generally suggest scheduling your appointment on a nice quiet day. If you’re trying to get ready for an event, I’d also recommended scheduling your BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment at least one week beforehand.

BOTOX® Cosmetic has a wide array of medical uses, and the variety of its effectiveness is remarkable, but for anti-aging, I really recommend concentrating on the upper third of the face.  Think of BOTOX® Cosmetic as specializing in reducing the lines around the crow’s feet, between your eyes, and on the forehead. It is a fabulous treatment for overly expressive areas of the face that develop wrinkles when you laugh or frown.

Having said that, BOTOX® Cosmetic also works very effectively when paired with other procedures, most notably filler injections.  A popular product, and one that I like to recommend, is hyaluronic acid.  It is most popularly know by some of its brand names: JUVÉDERM® XC or JUVÉDERM Voluma®XC, which, like BOTOX® Cosmetic, are also Allergan products. JUVÉDERM®XC helps fill in the lines and wrinkles, usually around the mouth. JUVÉDERM Voluma®XC helps to replace lost volume in the midface, along the cheekbones or middle part of the face, and helps correct facial sagging. So if you think of JUVÉDERM® XC and JUVÉDERM Voluma®XC as helping the bottom part of your face, and BOTOX® Cosmetic as helping the upper face, you have good coverage between the two products. And, just like BOTOX® Cosmetic, JUVÉDERM®XC and JUVÉDERM Voluma®XC are also in-office procedures with minimal to no downtime.

Botox Brilliant Distinctions

Dr. DeRosa participates in the Brilliant Disticntion program.

An important thing to note, if you are pregnant, plan on becoming pregnant soon, or are breastfeeding, you should not get BOTOX® Cosmetic, JUVÉDERM®XC, or JUVÉDERM Voluma®XC. As with a lot of medical procedures, it is important to tell your doctor about your medical history in order to help avoid any complications.

A Double Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon

If you are familiar with my practice, you know that I am a double-board certified facial plastic surgeon. Because you hear so much about BOTOX® Cosmetic these days, you may ask, do I really need to go to a facial plastic surgeon to something as common as BOTOX® Cosmetic injections?

Honestly, I think it’s smart. Given my extensive years of medical schooling, training, and practice, I have a deep understanding of the face and its musculature. While BOTOX® Cosmetic is common, it is still a procedure involving your face. I think that it is a good idea to put your face in the hands of someone who is well qualified.  I’m also in a good position to help you if you have questions about other facial plastic procedures that may be a good fit for you.

BOTOX Boston

People who come to me for Botox® are typically trying to reduce some of the lines or wrinkles that are seen in-between the brow, in the forehead, or the crows feet or the crinkles on the side of the eyes. The way to think about Botox® is that it helps soften wrinkles that occur when you are expressive. So people who scowl a lot will get a deep line between their eyebrows; people raise their eyebrows lot may start to get wrinkles in their forehead; and people who squint or smile a lot may start to see those crows feet.

Does Botox® Hurt?

Botox® itself doesn’t hurt, but to give Botox® it’s an injection, so I use a small needle and I typically describe it as feeling like you’re plucking a little eyebrow hair that’s like never been plucked before. So it hurts for a second but then it’s over.

After Botox® is injected you may notice little pinpricks spots from the different injection sites and sometimes it can cause bruising. The bruising can be covered up with make up.

I recommend that people that don’t do any kind of vigorous exercise, or go into a steam room, or fly, anything where there’s changes in pressure or things that can make your face flush and the blood vessels dilate, because then the Botox® can move a little bit. See you want to kind of stay quiet and stay in the right place and over the course of about 24 hours it should be fine. Botox® typically doesn’t work right away so it can take up to two full weeks to see the full effects. Most people will soon start seeing effects of Botox® in about three days and then over the course the next 10 days or so you’ll see the full results.
